The first run is the deepest

Good morning! How was your Monday? Mine was wonderful! I ran, ran some errands for the family I nanny for, and ended the evening watching Big Bang Theory Season 2.

Yesterday was a sunny high of 55 degrees of course it was several degrees colder at 10am when I went for my run. I have a few friends who hate running in the cold. I love it! I'd much rather run in 45 degree weather than the 98 degrees with a heat index of 115 that H-Town experiences during the summer. So I suited up, readied Daisy (the iPhone), and off I went.

This week I'm alternating between running 60 seconds and walking 90 seconds. The downside to this is that I'd much rather the 9 minutes consecutively than starting and stopping. Overall the alternating time was easy so I'm going to spend the next couple weeks to work on my form. My friend Larry over at Welcome to Mayberry R.F.D. went running with me one day awhile back and informed me that my form was horrific. Apparently I don't pick up my feet enough. I spent yesterday feeling like I was doing butt kicks the whole way but this gave me the "wheel" motion needed. So hopefully muscle memory will take over in the next couple of weeks.

Well that's about it for my first day of running. I'm off to a cycle class with an amazing instructor I haven't taken a class from in quite awhile! I'll leave you with a picture of the "hill" I ran. I figured might as well include some inclines now plus it was such a pretty day!

You've got to have Eyes of a Tiger

Well I weighted in this morning with only 1.3 gain. I'll take it with knowing all of the yummy eats I enjoyed this past week. Here is a tip: If you typically don't weight yourself pretty regularly weight yourself, weight yourself before the holidays. That way when the goodies are out of the house you know exactly how much damage you did and can IMEDIATLY take care of it! It may only be 1.3 gain this year but multiple that times 20 years? Yea you can do the math on that one. On to some, what I feel is exciting news!

The first thing you do when trying to lose weight is set a weight goal, mine was 85lbs, 225-145. However, you don't want to look at the big picture to often. 85lbs can be daunting, so I set mini goals of 5lbs.

This past fall I was training for a half marathon set for mid November. I was pushing myself and felt that I overall was doing pretty well. I think I may have pushed myself a bit harder than was wise and ended up with a knee injury squashing my half marathon dreams...for th time being.

I've strengthened the knee and mentally hyped myself up for the training to come. This time around I'm planning on taking training ultra conservative. I'll apply the same principal as with my weight loss by setting mini goals, 5K, 10K, Half. After looking at several training plans I've landed on the C25K, Couch to 5k. It is a 9 week plan...that has an iPhone app that uses your iTunes! SCORE! I'll start training today thus putting week 9 at February 26. I've decided to run the...

This should be interesting given that I'll be skiing during week 9...outside...no little gym where we are staying.

This time around I'll so be doing some Crosstraining. I've tried sticking with weight lifting plans but I'm a social little butterfly and for this butterfly just listening to my iPod just doesn't do it for me. Since I don't have a gym buddy I'll have to do the next best thing...group strength training classes. Now I don't know anyone in these classes and even though I'm a social butterfly, I'm a bit shy when first meeting people.

However, I've discovered dispite the fact that I may leave a class not talking to one person just being surrounded by people gives me that social aspect I need. So I'll be taking two strengting training classes a week.

When I first joined my gym I tried a lot of different classes. One that kind of was intimidating was cycling classes. I had pictures of natzi spin in structors yelling at me. Also the idea of sitting in a saddle for an hour? However, my dad rides road bikes and got me to agree to ride a 25 mile ride. So I hit up a cycle class to help with training.

Well I fell in love with cycle classes! The first class was def extermely hard. I however have a policy of never leaving a class so I toughed out that first class. I loved loud blood pumping music and there are some amazing instructors. One of my favotire insturctors says funny things like "Dance your peddles!" or "Ride like Lance!"So I'll be doing that a couple times a week as well.

So here is a lesson from me to you.

1. Find what works for you. I know that if I'm planning on doing the elliptical I HAVE to have a book to read...one that I've never read before. As I said I know that I either need to take a lift class or have a buddy.

2. Don't be afraid to try new things! I discovered that I LOVE cycle. Maybe for you its Kickboxing. I have a friend who has been trying to get me to Zumba so hopefully here soon my schedule will line up with hers so I can give it a go.

3. Once you have found what you like and what works for you set a fitness goal. Maybe you want to run a race or ride a ride. Perhaps you would like to bench press XX amount of weight or do the elliptical for an hour. Set a goal, have Eyes of a Tiger on that goal, and once you reach your goal tell a friend and do some celebrateing!

"Undying Determination"

I'm really excited about this next coming week! One main reason is that the house will finally be rid of these...

This was just the beginning of the Christmas goodie pile. We added a pie and Mexican Cornbread to the pile...minus the Christmas morning feast and Christmas dinner of course. While last year I was freakishly strict on my eating, this year I was a little more lenient. Weighting in tomorrow should be interesting. However, this is one reason why I want to be well under the top of my healthy weight range. Some treats like Pumpkin Chocolate chip cookies, boxes of chocolate, Puppy Chow, Sausage balls, and fudge like Christmas only come once a year. Now I'm not saying its a free for all but you have to have a good size sampling of everything!

In addition to being back to my normal eating this week is also the return of the gym...which got nixed after last week's craziness. Which I'm SUPER excited about! Let me explain...

A yesterday I read a blog by Page over at Twenty-six and then some. She talked about being passionate about her job and her running. Which is two things I'm working on! I'm determined to pass my Personal Training certification test. I've taken this stupid test 4 times to no avail, however, I'm determined to pass the darn thing.

My second goal is to run a half marathon. Running is in my view one of the toughest "sports." For me, probably with the first 4 minutes my body is telling me to stop running. My mind is being rational and telling me that my energy systems are kicking in. After that I'm good till I starting adding milage because thats when my mind finally goes. I start telling myself that I'm crazy and that running 6 miles is impossible. Some how I gut it out and start the whole process over a few days later.

Both passing my PT and finishing a half marathon are part of this whole boost my confidence thing. I think it's important to dream dreams and then to fight for these dreams. Now when I was a little girl I dreamed of being a Rock Star...I don't have a good enough voice to be a Rock Star. However, I am good at training and I can run and have always dreamed of being a real runner. Sometimes you just need some Undying determination.

Look for my training plan and some tips I've learned along the way. Between then and now what are you dreams? How are you reaching them?

The Chronicles of Red Girl

Phew! It has been a CRAZY last few days. I've literally been bouncing from one thing to the next.

I spent most of my week with these two guys.

I like to affectionally refer to them has "My little blurs", the 3 and 6 year old I nanny for. This is typically how we spend our afternoons. The boys play soccer, or rather chase the ball, for a bit. Then some how I always end up being tackled and attacked as they make light saber noises...because they are Jedis of course! Depending on the day, and typically the mood of the 3 year old, they maybe good Jedi or bad Jedi...I am always refereed to as Red Girl, a Jedi in the Clone Wars era.

Since the boys were off from school we spent a couple of days running around H-Town. Monday we started off at the zoo...
and we ended our day on the train.

Monday was also my young adult bible studies Christmas party. We had dinner Mia Bella down in the Pavilion.

I had my first encounter with Eggplant which was roasted and paired with spring greens, goat cheese, and a balsamic vinegar. I'm now a fan of Eggplant...I'll have to look for WW recipes. I gave into my love...carbs. They had the most amazing sour dough bread...which maybe my favorite type of bread.

As you can see we are a very serious group.

I love her...and I love her in this picture.

Afterwards we went to Discovery Green. Downtown is pretty this time of year.

Tuesday the boys and I went to the Natural Science Museum.

I think it was a bit over their heads...ok my head for that matter. But they had fun playing in the Chemistry section and seeing the dinosaurs.

I'm really looking forward to next week! I've got some exciting plans for the week that yall will reap the benefits of! If I don't see you till then have a Very Merry Christmas!

Vomit free since '93

I woke up this morning, after only getting 4 hours of sleep, feeling perfectly fine...maybe a little more ravenous than normal. Then as I stood in the kitchen cooking some oatmeal I felt as if I were about pass out and throw up. So I grabbed a banana and sat down on the floor. I was thinking I just need to get some food. A few minutes later I felt fine enough to stand...then almost immediately felt sick again. I made my way to the couch and conked out for a few hours.

On a random side note. Thursdays are "Sneak Peak" days. My official Weight In is Monday mornings however I weight myself Thursdays. That way I know if I need to slow down on my extra weekly and/or hit the gym harder or ok keep it up its working. Well I'm down 2lbs this week! A couple weeks ago WW revamped their points system. They look at calories in a more complete way...and fruit is FREE! I'm thinking the more complete look at calories is kicking the weight loss up.

Top of the afternoon to ya

Well this morning I rolled out of bed at 10:30. I think it may have to do with my new morning routine. The routine is the same every morning...there is however a huge discrepancy in the wake times. I'm a nanny and some days I don't have to be with the kids till the afternoon...others I'm at work at 8am. Which means a 5am wake up call, like yesterday morning.Either way my routine is as follow:

1. Head to...

Note: Yes this is my drink of the day. Yes I know it's mid December however Houston has what I like to lovingly call schizo weather...

2. Then I settle into this beastly book.

I've found that like working out I need to get out of the house to be disciplined enough to dig into my Bible. To be honest, which is the whole point of this bloggy, I've been horrible about reading my Bible and prayer. I think part of it is that if I know I'm suppose to do something (reading the Bible or anything else)...I just don't. Which is one of the most ridiculous ways to live your life in general...even more ridiculous when you apply it to getting to know the Creator of everything. When He has done SO much for me, that whole sending His Son to die on the Cross is just a minor beginning, and I'm pathetic enough to have any sort of excuse? As a friend of mine likes to say "You little sinner." However thank God for grace...no really THANK YOU!

On tap the rest of the day?
Studying (more on that one later) and Spin

So what's your morning routine? What does you HAVE to do/have or your day is just off?

So here is the skinny

I was over weight for 23 years of my 25 years. At my highest I weighted in at a whopping 225 on a petit 5'4". Several factors played into how I got so heavy; 10 years of chronic headaches, enabling parents, and the classic emotional eating. Well after having surgery to correct the headaches and generally being tired of being obese I joined weight watchers, WW Jan 2009.
My 23rd birthday...two days before I joined WW.

In march 2010 I hit goal, 145 which is the top of my healthy weight range. However I'm back in losing mode 8 months later to drop an additional 20 lbs. There are two motives behind this.

1. I want some wiggle room for birthdays, holidays, and just life. If I'm at the top of my healthy weight range and the holidays hit and I put back a temporary few lbs I'm no longer healthy.
2. I still see fat. Now I know some of that has to do with being obese for so many years. However I do think dropping a few more help with this, knowing I'm not on the verge of being overweight due to reason number 1.

This blog will document my last bit of makeover. This last 20 lbs is more about a confidence makeover than the weight itself. So how does that happen? Well you will just have to stay tuned to find out.

This is the journey from fat girl to skinny girl to confident girl...well a more confident girl.
